Something Better Than Untitled
“This body of work has been driven by a sense of nostalgia that i can’t necessarily claim as my own. I often seek inspiration from content which was publicized decades before I was born. I look to print media from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s most notably, where adverts boasted the best cigarettes, cars and liquor all with some of the funniest tag lines you could imagine. All that is offered up by flipping through a Life Magazine from 1983 gives me pause: the cover baring diplomates note worthy for some long lost reason, the Marlboro men on the reverse cover and the washed out time faded colours in the images in-between.
When looking back in this manner it become abundantly clear that modern design is in many ways homogenized into glassy sleek look that is uninteresting and advertising has become annoying hum that is too loud to ignore. Why is the A&W guy yelling at me in the middle of my youtube video?”

Louis Trautman
Louis Trautman was raised in Canmore, AB and received a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2017. While the focus of his degree was conceptual photography, recently his mediums of choice have been based in acrylic paint, resin and collage. As well as a visual artist, Louis is a working musician. Whether it’s with music or his visual works Louis often implements themes of nostalgia with a certain degree of humour.
